Todd Bowles: Defensive Mastermind

Published by Cory Hays on

This offseason, the Buccaneers hired Todd Bowles to join Bruce Arians staff as the Defensive Coordinator. Bowles had just been fired from his head coaching position by the New York Jets nine days prior. So far, Bowles has the Buccaneers Defense playing lights out.

When Bowles was Defensive Coordinator in 2013, Bowles Defense in Arizona finished as the 6th total Defense in the NFL. Right now in Tampa, they’re ranked 8th before the rest of the teams play Week 2. The Buccaneers have given up 256 and 352 yards in their 2 games. The Defense has also only given up one Offensive TD in two weeks. This is a night and day difference from Mike Smith’s system.

The players have bought in to Bowles Defensive scheme and it’s showing. Vernon Hargreaves III looks to be having a career year, Will Gholston is making his presence known, Vita Vea is clogging the middle, and the secondary is playing press coverage. The team brought in Shaq Barrett to be an edge rusher and he already has four sack in two games which means he’s on pace to break ten sacks. If the Defense keeps up their pace of play through 16 games, it’s going to be a great year.
