Shaq Barrett: Star In The Making

Published by Cory Hays on

The Buccaneers signed LB Shaquil Barrett to a one year, $4M deal this offseason and it looks like that investment is paying off big time. Barrett was overshadowed in his five seasons in Denver by Pro Bowl LB Von Miller and he was ready to prove that he belonged in the conversation to be a starter elsewhere. Barrett came to Tampa with a chip on his shoulder.

Barrett has come out the first two games on a mission. He had the sole sack in Week 1 against the 49ers and he stole the show for the Defense in Week 2 against the Panthers. Shaq Barrett got to Cam Newton time and time again in the game and those pressures resulted in three sacks (hat trick) in the same quarter. According to Trevor Sikkema of Pewter Report, Barrett is the first Buccaneer to have three sacks in the same quarter since 1991.

Shaq has four sacks already through two games. Fans have given him the name Sack Barrett and rightfully so. He’s on pace currently to join Jason Pierre-Paul as the only Buccaneers since 2005 to get ten sacks or more in a season. Barrett is playing like he will get a big contract this offseason and hopefully it’s with Tampa and this new Defense led by DC Todd Bowles.
