Vernon Hargreaves III: Breakout Season?

Published by Miles Fuca on

There were few highlights for the Buccaneers on Sunday. However, it’s a popular belief that the defense played well. The secondary looked very competent, holding the Jimmy Garoppolo led offense to 166 total passing yards. And for the most part every wide out was shut down, only wide receiver with more than one reception was rookie Deebo Samuel who had just 3 receptions for 17 yards. Needless to say, the Buccaneers cornerbacks did what they had to do. They weren’t playing Joe Montana and Jerry Rice by any means, but the good corners are supposed to stop receivers like the 49ers.

Who stood out, though? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to say that Vernon Hargreaves III played like the player we expected to see coming out of the University of Florida. VH3 had a very impressive pick six. Read Jimmy G’s eyes the whole way through and anticipated the route to perfection, jumped it and the rest is history. It was a great play to watch and restored momentum to Tampa after the OJ Howard fumble.

Yes, that was just one play. Yes, the Bucs lost. But Hargreaves deserves recognition for his performance on Sunday. In fact, according to Pro Football Focus, VH3 was ranked 4th in coverage grade among all CBs week one (84.9). Only allowing 1 reception and was targeted just three times.

Defense is back in Tampa and Hargreaves III is leading the DB group. All aboard the Hargreaves train.
