Top 100 NFL Teams in NFL History: Where do the 2002 Buccaneers rank?

Published by Leonard Leon on

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the NFL, USA Today decided to make a list of the TOP 100 teams in NFL History in order. The 2002 Buccaneers, known for the innovative “Tampa 2” defense were ranked 34th. Is that ranking too low? Absolutely!

It’s not everyday you innovate a defensive scheme. The 2002 Bucs Defense only allowed 12 points a game, picked off the league MVP 5 times in the Super Bowl and put on arguably the Super Bowl’s best defensive performance. What makes this ranking even worse is the team ranked ahead of them.

At 27 was the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles. The team was good don’t get me wrong but the 27th best in history? Hell no. The Bucs would’ve eaten that offense alive. Not anywhere close to historic.

At 25 was the 1968 Baltimore Colts. This team didn’t even win the Super Bowl and averaged 20 points a game on offense. Again good but not great. In my opinion, if you won an “NFL Title” and not a Super Bowl you should be farther down the list due to the Super Bowl being more prestigious.

The 2016 “Deflategate” Patriots came in at 19. How? Explain please. There was NOTHING special about that team outside of the Atlanta Falcons blowing a 25 point lead. 19th all time? Are you serious, USA Today?

The Buccaneers wreaked havoc from 1998-2002. They held the 1999 Rams (who are ranked 9th) to only 13 points becoming the only team to hold the “Greatest Show on Turf” to under 20 points. Like seriously, come on!

We ranked below the 1929 Packers(ranked 31st). We can’t compete with a team from the 1920s? Stop it, USA Today. If you ask me, The 2002 Bucs should be ranked between 15-20 all time. We had a TOP 5 defense of all time.

The disrespect continues for the Buccaneers. Tampa 2 is used in numerous playbooks around football since its inception. We left a better legacy than 34th out of 100.
