William Gholston Starter?
On Tuesday, the Buccaneers released their first round of depth charts for the season. Some people may be surprised to see William Gholston is listed as a starter at DE. This means that Gholston will be starting alongside Ndamukong Suh and Vita Vea on the line. This raises a big question for those not involved within the organization. Is Will Gholston starter material?
In 2017, William Gholston signed a four year, $27.5 million contract with the Buccaneers after his rookie contract. This contract included $13.5 million guaranteed. In his career, Gholston has 234 tackles, 11 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery. Buccaneer fans have been very critical of Gholston because they believe that his game should equal the contract that he received. Gholston is a big time run stopper for the Buccaneers so he can thrive in this new scheme brought to Tampa by Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles.
Gholston hasn’t really been named as someone standing out in Training Camp but it seems like the coaching staff believes in him. William Gholston won’t be the only person on the outside of the line as this new scheme will bring both LB and S into the box to blitz. With extra help rushing, Gholston could be someone that the Bucs can rely on off of the edge. He won’t be relied on for speed but he will absolutely be relied on for stuffing the run outside. It will be interesting to see if Gholston remains listed as the starter throughout the season.
