4 Underrated Buccaneers Heading Into 2019 Season
The 2019 Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster is going to look a little different this season. The new regime brought in players that they felt would fit their schemes including draft picks and DT Ndamukong Suh. Here are 4 Buccaneers who I feel are heading into the season as underrated.
1. DE Noah Spence – Spence has been on the team for 3 years and has yet to live up to his full potential due to injuries and the previous coaching staff not believing in him. The new regime believes in Noah Spence. In his rookie year, Spence played all 16 games and recorded 22 tackles including 16 solo and 5.5 sacks with 3 forced fumbles. The hybrid defense led by Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles should give Spence room to shine and I believe he will.
2. OLB Shaquil Barrett – Barrett played 61 games in 5 seasons in Denver and recorded 147 tackles, 14 sacks, and 7 forced fumbles. Shaq Barrett was playing in the shadow of Von Miller and didn’t really get the recognition that he deserved. He will come out with a chip on his shoulder and prove that he shouldn’t be overlooked and should be a starter.
3. S Jordan Whitehead – Whitehead played in 15 games and started 11 in his rookie season in 2018. Jordan Whitehead finished the season with 68 tackles and 4 pass deflections after replacing Chris Conte. Whitehead is a head hunter and was around the ball a lot in 2018 sideline to sideline after the offense got to the next level. Whitehead has the perfect opportunity to shine in his 2nd season where the Buccaneers secondary will be full of young players who will play to their strengths.
4. QB Jameis Winston – Surely a lot of people are going to question why the starting QB and number 1 overall pick in 2015 is on the underrated list. Jameis Winston is on this list because a lot of fans and media are doubting he can be the franchise QB due to turnovers throughout his 4 seasons in Tampa. Winston has made history already while being in the league throwing for 4,000 yards in each of his first 2 seasons. Winston also broke the Buccaneers TD record for QBs and is on the verge of breaking the yardage record this upcoming season. The 58 INTs and 18 fumbles lost are a big concern but Winston is working with Head Coach Bruce Arians and Offensive Coordinator Byron Leftwich on mechanics to limit both of these. The stats prove that Winston has the tools to be an elite QB which is why he is underrated going into his 5th season.
