ICYMI: Former Buccaneers DT Gerald McCoy Signs With Division Rival.

Published by All Things Bucs on

Disappointing yet non surprising news released yesterday afternoon. Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive-tackle Gerald McCoy has signed with the Carolina Panthers. The division-rivals are giving  Gerald McCoy only a one-year deal worth up to $10.25 million that includes a $4 million signing bonus, per Adam Schefter.

The news has most fans irked over the move, calling Gerald McCoy a “baby” and “petty”, especially when the signing was announced after McCoy’s replacement Ndamukong Suh announced he will be wearing #93…. Gerald’s old number. But it is clear that the Panthers have upgraded on the defensive front. He joins many studs. Fortunately he will be missed off the field but on the field, we will not have anything to worry about.

Contract Details for Gerald McCoy: 1 year, $4M to sign, $3M base, $500K camp roster bonus, $500K in 45-man per game bonus. Plus, 6.5 sacks for $500k, 8 sacks gets him $1.5M. 250K for Pro Bowl, $250K for playoffs. Just $4M guaranteed. Total: Up $10.25M.

This season is going to be interesting between the two teams. Gerald will be definitely be playing with a chip on his shoulder this season. Odds are he will get injured in the beginning of the season again anyway judging off past seasons. He also will be flying across the pond to play the Buccaneers now in London. Too be completely honest, Suh will benefit more in our new scheme. He will teach experience & grit to fellow DT Vita Vea. Opposing offensive lineman’s will be worried. It is known they do not like competing against Suh. Don’t blame them.
