Donovan Smith Time to Shine

Published by Kevin Sloan on

Heading into the 2019 NFL season, Buccaneers Left Tackle Donovan Smith is looking with a fresh new perspective.  After getting re-signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the beginning of the free agent period, Smith is looking to prove that is he worth the money.

“Donovan Smith signs a three-year, $41.25 million deal & gets $27 million fully guaranteed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.”

Smith is going into his fifth season after being the second player in Buccaneers history to start every game in their first four seasons and will look to continue his record pace for 2019 and beyond. He has handled one of the game’s most important positions without any hiccups in his way and he has been an “iron man” playing every snap in three out of his four seasons. He recently matched Buccaneers Ring of Honor member former Left Tackle Paul Gruber.

Moving forward under new Head Coach Bruce Arians, he is now learning a new offensive system and is looking to improve on his play to become that anchor on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offensive Line. With new coaches in OC Bryon Leftwich and Offensive Line coach Harold Goodwin, he is looking to be more of an enforcer alongside Ali Marpet to keep QB Jameis Winstons’ backside clean. In his first four seasons as a Buccaneer, Donovan Smith has been a key part of an offensive attack that has recorded the 5th most total net yards (375.3). Tampa Bay also ranks 6th in passing yards (269.8), 7th in yards per play (5.76) and 3rd in third-down conversion rate (43.7%) in that same span.

General Manager Jason Licht spoke very highly of Donovan at his press conference and will love to keep seeing him grow and become that star he drafted in 2015. Licht mentioned that, Donovan has been a valuable player and a model of durability since we drafted him four years ago. With that vote of confidence from Jason Licht and Bruce Arians, the future is Donovan’s to take.
