Who Wins the Slot?
Tampa Bay is loaded at wide receivers coming into the 2019 NFL Season. There is one question that looms for the Buccaneers. The Buccaneers have two big receivers on the outside in Evans and Godwin. The deep threat is covered with Perriman. They must find someone to fill the role that Humphries played last year in the slot. There are some names to consider Bobo Wilson, Justin Watson, and Scott Miller.
Candidate #1 is Bobo Wilson from Florida State. Bobo is very good friends of Jameis Winston. Wilson is 24 years old and stands 5’9 weighing in at 186 pounds. He has a good combination of strength and speed that could allow him to win the battle for the slot. In his career, Wilson has 4 receptions for 52 yards, but averages 13 yards per catch. Most will remember Bobo from when the Buccaneers appeared in Hard Knocks.
Candidate #2 is Justin Watson from Penn. He is 6’3, 215 pounds. The 2018 season left the Buccaneers wondering what they had in Watson. He only managed one reception for five yards. During his time as a Quaker, Penn pulled in 286 receptions for almost 3,800 yards. Watson had 33 touchdowns and averaged 13 yards per catch. Could the Penn product be the answer for the Buccaneers in 2019?
Candidate #3 Scott Miller from Bowling Green is probably going to have many fans talking about him after training camp ends. The Buccaneers drafted Miller in the 6th round (208) in this year’s draft. He is 5’9, 171 pounds and probably the most comparable to Adam Humphries. In fact Miller has been quoted saying that he studied Humphries tapes for the Buccaneers. In college he collected 215 receptions for almost 2,900 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also rushed six times for 38 yards.
All of these are great candidates to fill the role that Humphries left for us. It really depends on what the Buccaneers envision for the 2019 season. They have monstrous receivers surrounding Jameis and one under 6’0 may fit perfectly in the mix, but how can you argue when every receiver is 6’1 or taller. We shall see, but one thing’s for sure the Bucs have plenty of talented candidates to pick from this year.
