Buccaneers Military Family Gala

Published by Kevin Sloan on

Over the last weekend, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers held their 5th annual Military Family Award Gala to celebrate the military families in the Tampa Bay area. Working with the Central Florida USO, The Buccaneers organization gave the award to each family from one of the six military branches: Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and National Guard/Reserves. From the Buccaneers website the award is given to the family who has best demonstrated the values of, “integrity, courage, commitment, and service before self while sharing in the sacrifices of service to our country.

The award itself named after famous Desert Storm General the late General H Norman Schwarzkopf and his family. One of the famous quotes the General was known for was the mention of the family in, “You can’t help someone get up a hill without getting closer to the top yourself.” The pure mention of that held a special place in my heart as being a Marine veteran who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom I can understand the importance of family and its values of having that support system in place.

The gala was held at One Buc Place in Tampa, Florida under the bright lights and was attended by current Buccaneers Owner and President of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Foundation and Glazer Family Foundation Darcie Glazer Kassewitz and fellow Buccaneer players Ryan Jensen and Evan Smith was there to meet and greet the families there. Smith who has 12 family members who have served or currently serving in the military was able to share his love and appreciation to the families there and to share stories and talked about his brother who is a Purple Heart recipient and fellow veteran.

For Jensen, the gala was also a warm reception for his family as well because of his grandfather who served in the Army during the Vietnam and Korean wars. Jensen said, “It’s an awesome recognition for the military families and Often times the families get a little forgotten about so this is a great opportunity to bring them into the spotlight and thank them for their service because they’re serving the country too by keeping our men and women who are on the front lines going.”

The crew at ATB and BLN would like to send their congratulations to all the families and send their heartfelt thanks for the sacrifice of their military members.
