The Ideal Scenario For The Buccaneers 1st Round Pick

Published by Gabriel Kelber on

It’s the offseason of a decade in Tampa Bay.

For this franchise, it’s now or never. The Buccaneers made their biggest splash this offseason by acquiring the former 2x Coach Of The Year in Bruce Arians. The former Cardinals coach talks an ambitious and confident game of winning now, but with limited cap space that restricted the team’s free agent spending, the 2019 NFL Draft’s importance increases all the more…

Simply put, the Buccaneers have to win this year; Tampa Bay’s 1st round draft selection is going to have a big say in whether or not this team accomplishes its goals for 2019 and beyond. With a premium top-5 pick, hitting on the right player is going to make this decision all the more crucial for GM Jason Licht and Arians, who are teaming up for their first offseason together.

So what should the selection be? What scenario would be ideal for a Bucs team that can never seem to escape the cellar of the last place in the NFC South?

The Achilles heel of this team is the defense. While Tampa Bay boasts one of the league’s most potent offenses, the defense has continually been the downfall of this team. For the last 3 seasons, the Bucs defense has finished with the 27th, 32nd, and 23rd total defense in the NFL. No matter how you shake that, that just isn’t good. With that being said, the unit has a lot of young talent, and with the proper coaching staff now in place to cultivate that youth and skill, this defense can be lethal with a few pieces added; that is where the Draft comes into play.

With the recent loss of fan-favorite MLB Kwon Alexander to free agency, finding an impact replacement for him is a huge need. A player that has been considered a potential successor, and possibly even an upgrade at the LB position, is Devin White, the 21-year-old out of LSU (how ironic!). With sideline-to-sideline speed and athleticism, while also possessing the coverage skills needed to be proficient on passing downs, White has been linked to the Buccaneers for obvious reasons. Selecting the LSU linebacker would fill a huge need at the MIKE position, and create another deadly tandem with Lavonte David.

With Josh Allen and Quinnen Williams likely to be selected before the team’s pick at 5, this opens the door for Tampa Bay to draft another LSU linebacker to be the leader of the defensive unit. However, Jason Licht is known to ‘wheel and deal’ with his draft picks, and if he believes he could trade down and acquire more draft picks while still selecting the player he would’ve chosen at his original spot, he’ll do it (see last year’s draft with Vita Vea).

That being said, the ideal scenario for this franchise would be to trade down a couple of spots and still select LSU’s, Devin White. Will that be possible? Is it realistic? Time will tell.

Regardless of who you believe the Buccaneers should select with their 1st round pick, it’s an important decision; a decision that could have dramatic effects on the future of this franchise.
