Impact Players: Tampa Bay vs. Carolina

Published by Kevin Sloan on

“Hey! Hey! Tampa Bay”. It’s that time for your weekly impact players report for week 9 where our Tampa Bay Buccaneers travel up to the mountains of the Carolinas to face fellow NFC South foe QB Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers.  This matchup is the 1st of the season for both teams and they will meet up later in week 13th in Tampa. After the Buccaneers latest defeat from the Cincinnati Bengals after QB Jameis Winston was benched after a 4-interception performance and replace for backup QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and it seem magic from FitzMagic came back when he roared an 18-point comeback to tie the game and the Bucs defense could not hold the Bengals in the final minute and lost by a field goal.

At 3-4 the Buccaneers season really come down to this week match-up as the NFC is starting to get a little clearer for the post season races. For the Bucs they face that vaunted Panthers defense led by captain LB Luke Kuechly and crew. We will see if the magic can continue this week and try to get back to .500 and stay in the NFC south and wild-card race.

For this week impact players, I am calling on WR Adam Humphries for the Buccaneers while for the Panthers I am looking at QB Cam Newton.

Adam Humphries 3rd Year Pro Wide Receiver 5’11 195lbs Clemson

WR Adam Humphries has worked his way to becoming a key part of the Buccaneers explosive offense and his ability to play as a Kick Returner specialist makes him a nice threat against opposing defenses. But for this season Humphries has been a slow starter with zero TD’s this season currently and will try to get his first against the stingy Panthers defense. Out of Clemson he has worked his way up the roster and was team most reliable receiver outside of fellow WR’s Mike Evans & Chris Godwin in 2017.

After signing a one-year $2.19M deal this off-season Humphries is starting to face an uncertainly after this season with the logjam of WR’s. He will get another contract from either the Bucs to stay or go to another team with his skill set. My challenge is for Humphries to establish field position in the return game and maybe get a TD or two this Sunday.

For fantasy football owners he is a stash player for those PPR leagues and from Yahoo Fantasy Football they have him at 2.93 pts. I think he will help some during the latter part of the season for owners.

Cam Newton 8rd Year Pro Quarterback 6’5 245lbs Auburn

For QB Cam Newton this year the Panthers QB has undergone a new change in his career with a new offensive coordinator in Norv Turner. Under Turner’s unique scheme it has paid off for Newton and the Panthers offense which has guided them to a 5-2 start this season for 2nd in the NFC South. According to ESPN some of the football analysis and experts are seeing a MVP type season for Newton this year which would be his 2nd MVP award if he ends up being a finalist this season among his peers. Newton is on pace for a nice statistical season with 17 total touchdowns with 13 passing and 4 rushing. He faces a revamped Bucs defense under interim DC Mark Duffner which has started off slow in the start of games but seem to turn it around in the 2nd half of games.

Newton himself gets praise from his defensive coordinator Eric Washington was quoted by one of the reporters from ESPN saying, “I’m glad we don’t have to face him because of the multiple ways he can beat you.” Also, “He’s playing as well as anybody right now.” He is also working on taking less sacks at a career best pace (10) currently after seven games. Which is showing that Turner’s scheme is starting to work for the best out of Newton.

For you fantasy football players Cam is a strong QB 1 option as well projecting to make about 27.82 pts. per Yahoo Fantasy Football.
