Turning Point- Bucs vs Browns

Published by ashliea on

In the Tampa Bay area on Sunday, there was a change in the atmosphere . Maybe it was the crisp, light air as the the temperature was below 85 degrees for the first time since may. Or maybe it was the change at defensive coordinator with Duffner taking the reigns of a defense that ranked dead last in every imaginable category.

Against the Cleveland Browns, the Cinderella story team of the year who notched not one but TWO wins on the season after yet another winless season last year, the Bucs did not start out how they would have liked. After a Bengals punt pinned them down inside their one, the Bucs ran run play that NEARLY became a safety. Naturally you’d try a pass play if that happens, possibly a rollout to a TE for some breathing room, but the Bucs went for a stretch run which ended in RB Peyton Barber being tackled in his own end zone. A safety.

Thankfully, the Bucs found their groove on offense with a 14 yard end around run by WR Desean Jackson to put the Bucs up 9-2 in the first. Then, Jameis did his best Cam Newton impersonation and dove from the 5 yard line to put the Bucs up 16-2 at the half.

Right before the half, LB Kwon Alexander went down with a noncontact injury to his knee and was rolled out of the rest of the game at half time which would later be revealed as a torn ACL.The Buccaneers team was in obvious disbelief Seeing their heart and soul of the defense down on the field. This is what caused a turning point for the Cleveland Browns as they went onto score 14 Unanswered points after being down 23 to 9 (thanks to Ronald Jones first NFL rushing touchdown). During these two Touchdown drives the Browns carved of the defense and failed to get enough pressure on to Baker Mayfield as he connected with wide receiver Jarvis Landry time after time.

The real turning point for this game, however, was when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers put up a valiant goal line stand against the Cleveland Brown who went forward on fourth and one from the Bucs 1 yard line with a quarterback sneak with Baker Mayfield. linebacker Adarius Taylor sniffed out the play and jumped over the line to initially Stop Baker Mayfield and was then met by linebacker Lavante David and the rest of the defensive line. This prompted a “row the boat” celebration for the team and ignited a fire in them.

The Buccaneers had a chance to win the game thanks to some nifty throws by QB Jameis Winston to get them within FG range for a 40 yard attempt at the end of regulation but shockingly HC Dirk Koetter decided to run down the clock instead of trying to get more yardage with 45 seconds left and two timeouts surprising many a fan. Chandler Catanzaro would go onto missed a field goal attempt and send the Buccaneers and the Cleveland Browns to overtime.

This was the Buccaneers first overtime game of the series but for the Cleveland Browns it would be their fourth. The Bucs forced Cleveland to punt thanks to a Carlton Davis coverage on a third-down pass intended for David Njoku, but The Bucs could not get anything going offensively And went three and out. This led to a Brian anger punt with only 3 1/2 minutes left in the overtime period. Jabrill peppers fielded the punt and was heading up the middle of the field when tight end Anthony Auclair made a heads up play after being knocked down on punt coverage to knock the ball out of Peppers’ hands And force the one and only turnover for the Buccaneers that game.

The Buccaneers would get into field-goal range during this drive but would be knocked back to almost Midfield due to two sacks taken by quarterback Jameis Winston. With a 3rd and 29 looming, Winston hung in a collapsing pocket and fired a beautiful ball to WR Desean Jackson being hovered by 2 Browns players to get the Bucs on the edge of Catanzaro’s field goal range at 59 yards. Although Catanzaro had missed an extra point and a 40 yarder earlier in the game head coach dirt cutter knew that this would be the last chance the Bucs would have the ball with less than two minutes in the game to play and was going for the Win instead of hoping for a tie. Catanzaro hook to the kick it just enough to be within the goal posts and all of Raymond James Stadium erupted in both disbelief and pure joy. Browns QB Baker Mayfield could be seen hunched over wide eyed in disbelief himself.

The Tampa Bay buccaneers have moved to 3-3 and stopped a three-game losing streak. It wasn’t pretty by any means, but on a day this high-powered offense was not firing on all cylinders a defense stepped up when it needed to and made big plays. The Buccaneers hope to take this momentum into Cincinnati as they face the bengals in week eight.
