Bucs vs Browns Week 7 Instant Reaction
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-3) hosted the Cleveland Browns (2-3-1) in their first home game in a month. It was a very interesting game. Lets get started.
Jameis Winston started his second game of the season and first at home. Winston went 32/52 for 365 yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTs, and 1 fumble. He also rushed 10 times for 55 yards and 1 score. Winston needs to be more aware of the LB spy and make sure he throws it over the top of them and he should be fine. I expect a better passing game next week in Cincinnati.
Rookie Baker Mayfield looked just like a rookie in the first half. Mayfield went 23/34 for for 215 yards, 2 TDs, and 0 INTs. Baker was a man on a mission in the 2nd half. Mayfield also rushed 4 times for 43 yards including a long 35 yarder in the 4th quarter.
Peyton Barber and Ronald Jones both got involved in the rushing game. Barber rushed 11 times for 30 yards and Jones rushed 6 times for 13 yards and 1 TD. Barber continues to make his own plays out of the backfield as it seems he is always hit when the ball is handed off. DeSean Jackson rushed 2 times for 8 yards including a 14 yard rushing TD. Jameis Winston was the leading rusher with 55 yards.
Nick Chubb became the primary RB for Cleveland as Carlos Hyde was traded on Friday. Chubb rushed 18 times for 80 yards and 1 TD. Duke Johnson rushed 1 time for -4 yards.
Mike Evans led all Buccaneers pass catchers with 7 catches for 107 yards. OJ Howard had 5 catches for 67 yards. Chris Godwin had 5 catches for 59 yards including 3 on one drive. Adam Humphries had 4 catches for 37 yards. DeSean Jackson had 2 catches for 25 yards. Cam Brate had 3 catches for 23 yards and 1 fumble. Ronald Jones had 1 catch for 15 yards. Antony Auclair had 3 catches for 15 yards. Jacquizz Rodgers had 1 catch for 11 yards. Alan Cross had 1 catch for 6 yards on a 4th down conversion.
Jarvis Landry led all Browns receivers with 10 catches for 97 yards and 1 TD. David Njoku had 4 catches for 52 yards and 1 TD. Damion Ratley had 3 catches for 23 yards. Duke Johnson had 4 catches for 23 yards. Antonio Callaway had 1 catch for 14 yards. Breshad Perriman had 1 catch for 6 yards.
The Buccaneers Offensive Line had some mental mistakes throughout the game. There were a few big penalties including false starts and holding. The Offensive Line gave up 4 sacks for 23 yards.
The Browns Offensive Line shot themselves in the foot throughout the game as well. Plenty of yellow flags on the field. Browns Offensive Line gave up 5 sacks for 29 yards.
The Buccaneers Defensive Line came to play today without both Gerald McCoy and Vinny Curry due to injury. Jason Pierre-Paul had 3 tackles including a sack. This puts him at 6 sacks through 6 games on the season. Carl Nassib had 2 sacks which were both of his tackles and 1 pass breakup in coverage. Beau Allen had 2 tackles including 1 for a loss. William Gholston had 1 tackle which was a sack. Vita Vea had 1 tackle. Although Vea had 1 tackle, he had a big impact stuffing the middle the whole game and taking on double teams.
The Browns Defensive Line wreaked havoc on the Bucs Offensive Line. Emmanuel Ogbah had 5 tackles including 1.5 sacks and 2 pass deflections. Myles Garrett had 2 tackles which were both sacks. Larry Ogunjobi had 2 tackles including 0.5 sacks.
The Buccaneers Linebackers were on fire in this game. Kwon Alexander seemed to read the tweets that people were firing off at him and it fired him up. Alexander finished with 7 tackles and 1 pass deflection. Alexander exited the game at the end of the 1st half and the belief is that he has a torn ACL. More information will be known after an MRI. Lavonte David had 8 tackles including 2 for a loss. David also had a big strip fumble at the end of the 1st half that cost Cleveland points. Adarius Taylor had 7 tackles including 1 sack. Devante Bond had 2 tackles. Jack Cichy had 1 tackle before he went down with a knee injury.
The Browns Linebackers were watching Jameis Winston the entire game. Christian Kirksey had 10 tackles, 1 INT, and 1 fumble recovery. Jamie Collins had 7 tackles and 1 INT. Tanner Vallejo had 2 tackles. Genard Avery had 2 tackles and 1 fumble recovery.
The Buccaneers Defensive Backs finally had a decent game against an opposing QB. Justin Evans had 8 tackles. MJ Stewart had 5 tackles. Isaiah Johnson had 3 tackles and 1 fumble recovery. Jordan Whitehead had 3 tackles. Brent Grimes had 3 tackles and 1 pass breakup. Carlton Davis had 2 tackles and 1 big pass breakup down the stretch.
The Browns Defensive Backs had a huge game to matchup with their LBs. Damarious Randall had 12 tackles. Briean Boddy-Calhoun had 10 tackles, 1 pass breakup, and 1 QB hit. Jabrill Peppers had 8 tackles and 1 pass breakup. TJ Carrie had 4 tackles. Denzel Ward had 4 tackles including 1 for a loss and 2 pass breakups.
Buccaneers Special Teams were once again costly in this game. Bryan Anger punted 4 times for 187 yards with an average of 46.8 yards. Chandler Catanzaro went 2/3 on Field Goals including the game winning 59 yard Field Goal. Catanzaro also went 2/3 on Extra Points. There may be a question of who will be our kicker even with that game winner by Catanzaro.
Browns Special Teams continued to flip the field all game long. Britton Colquitt punted 9 times for 465 yards with an average of 51.7 yards. Colquitt’s longest punt was 79 yards. Greg Joseph did not attempt a Field Goal but went 3/3 on Extra Points.
The Buccaneers won the game 26-23 in Overtime as a result of a 59 yard game winning FG by Chandler Catanzaro. The first half of the game on both sides of the ball was great. When the Bucs came out for the 2nd half, it seemed like they were playing to not lose. It was 16-2 at halftime with Cleveland’s only points coming off of a safety. The Bucs Defense without Kwon Alexander seemed to slow down a bit and it allowed Cleveland to tie the game and send it into OT. Jameis Winston if he wants to be our franchise QB needs to learn when to throw the ball away and not take a sack or throw an INT. The Bucs Defense may be without 3 starters in McCoy, Curry, and Alexander if Alexander does indeed have a torn ACL. Kendell Beckwith is expected to return which would fill the void for the injured Alexander but Beckwith will be returning to his original position. The Bucs may look at bringing in another LB or just shifting our starters around. Tampa Bay goes into Cincinnati next week 3-3 against a good Bengals team. It will be a challenge but the team should be up to it.
