Tampa Bay Buccaneers Impact Players to Watch for: Cleveland VS Tampa Bay

Published by Kevin Sloan on

Hey! Hey! Tampa Bay and Bucs Nation. I am back again for latest picks for impact players of the week. Its Week 7 of this NFL season and our Buccaneers are heading into friendly waters back at Raymond James Stadium to face rookie QB Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns. After last week’s frustrating loss to their NFC South division rival Atlanta Falcons the Bucs dropped to 2-3 in the second part of the season and now look to face the revamped Browns.

The Buccaneers mounting pressure just went up a notch after HC Dirk Koetter had to fire his best friend and mentor Defensive Coordinator Mike Smith and promoted fellow Linebackers Coach Mark Duffner to interim DC for the rest of the season. After QB Jameis Winston coming off his 3-game suspension and his 1st start back played a Hella of a game against the Falcons Week 6 throwing for 395 yards 4 touchdowns with 2 ints. Coach Koetter and Co. is looking to right the ship with Winston back at home in Ray Jay in his 1st home game since preseason.

Going into this week’s matchup I am looking at the entire Buccaneers defense and for Cleveland I got rookie number one overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft Quarterback (QB) Baker Mayfield.

The Buccaneers Defense

This week I am putting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense in the spotlight after change in defensive coordinator Mike Smith departure. I want to see a change in this Buccaneers defense, for the last three seasons statically the ranked in the bottom three of the NFL in various defensive categories. As of now the Bucs are ranked 31st out of 32 teams which is a huge red flag for Coach Koetter and staff if they are looking to make it into next season. With the promotion of Coach Duffner, he preached the word “aggressive” in his first press conference with the media. Some we rarely saw with former DC Mike Smith 4-3 base scheme which had their press corners be at lease 8-10 yards off the WR which is easy money for keeping teams drives alive.

From the Buccaneers.com writer Scott Smith who spoke with the newly promoted DC, he stated that “I believe our approach has always been we play defense as aggressively as we possibly can,” he said. “That doesn’t define meaning necessarily all blitz or pressure. That means that you play hard, that you play physical, you play smart – all those words kind of go into that word, ‘aggressive.’ You can play aggressive coverage and be in zone defense. You can play aggressive run defense and not be in a pressure situation, so I think aggressive and physical is what we’ve got to be on defense. Defense has no room for being soft.”

My challenge I want for this Bucs defense, is to blitz more and attack the Quarterback and apply that pressure so the Buccaneers offense doesn’t have to over compensate for the lack of defense and play catch up against other teams. I think with this different approach and the high praises that was given by defense captains LB Lavonte David & LB Kwon Alexander, Coach Duffner who has been a NFL assistant coach over the last 22 years can at least make this defense somewhat better.

Baker Mayfield 1st Year Pro Quarterback 6’1 215lbs Oklahoma

Rookie Baker Mayfield has turned the city of Cleveland upside down after the departure of Ohio native LeBron James to the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA. The city has slowly run wild with Bakermania the overall number one pick in this year’s NFL Draft out of Oklahoma has assumed command of the Cleveland Browns and is now become the face of the franchise. Under HC Hue Jackson, the Browns has turned to Mayfield to bring this team back in the playoffs after the quarterback carousel that has plague the Browns since their return into the NFL. Cleveland fans feel the franchise has finally found their leader who can turn around the Browns and make them relevant again. After last week game against the Los Angeles Chargers which Mayfield told the media, “This is the worst loss I’ve ever had” He is looking to turn it around now against the Bucs if they want to get back on the winning track on Sunday.
