Recapping the Bucs Loss to the Steelers

Published by Cory Hays on

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hosted the 0-1-1 Pittsburgh Steelers for Week 3 of the NFL Season on Monday Night Football. This was game 2 at home for Tampa Bay. There was a lot of action in the game. Lets get started on this instant reaction.

QUARTERBACKS:

Ryan Fitzpatrick was no longer FitzMagic in this game. Fitzpatrick went 30 for 50 for 411 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. These interceptions would end up being the key to the game. Fitzpatrick ended up throwing all of his interceptions in the first half. One of his interceptions resulted in a pick 6. He settled down into the second half and got the team rolling. Fitzpatrick’s final QBR was 81.3 which is significantly down from the first 2 weeks.

The Steelers were rolling with 15 year veteran Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger ended up 30 for 38 for 353 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Ben Roethlisberger stepped up in the pocket a few times when the defense had him in the backfield and hit his receivers for big gains. His final QBR for the game was 120.7.

RUNNING BACKS:

Peyton Barber rushed 8 times for 33 yards. Ryan Fitzpatrick rushed 5 times for 27 yards. Jacquizz Rodgers rushed 2 times for -1 yards. It seems like the Buccaneers rushing attack cannot get going and there’s no exact reason why.

James Conner rushed 15 times for 61 yards. 3 of those runs were 10 or more yards. Stevan Ridley rushed 3 times for 18 yards. The Steelers throughout the game didn’t seem to have much of a running game.

PASS CATCHERS:

Mike Evans had a big game for the Bucs. Evans ended up with 6 catches for 137 yards and 1 touchdown. Evans’ touchdown resulted in breaking the Buccaneers all time receiving TD record. Chris Godwin had a decent game. Godwin had 5 catches for 74 yard and 1 TD. Godwin could’ve had a lot more had he not fumbled and dropped a few passes. DeSean Jackson had 3 catches for 37 yards. OJ Howard had 6 catches for 72 yards. Cameron Brate had 3 catches for 34 yards and 1 TD. Brate finally showed up in the stat sheet.

Antonio Brown is arguably the best WR in the NFL. Brown had 6 catches for 50 yards and 1 TD. Juju Smith-Schuster had the best day from the Steelers receiving core with 9 catches for 116 yards. Vance McDonald had 4 catches for 112 yards and 1 TD. McDonald’s TD came on a 75 yard catch and run.

OFFENSIVE LINE:

Tampa Bay’s Offensive Line looked very shaken up by the Steelers front 7. The Offensive Line gave up 3 sacks this week after only giving up 2 the first 2 weeks of the season. Ryan Jensen being ill may have played a factor but that’s no excuse for the entire Offensive Line to continue getting bull rushed by the Steelers Defense.

The Steelers Offensive Line gave up 3 sacks to the Bucs Defense this week. The Steelers Offensive Line was constantly rushed but Ben Roethlisberger made it easy for them as he continued to step up in the pocket and make good throws.

DEFENSIVE LINE:

The Buccaneers Defensive Line is getting some pressure each and every week. They continue to bring the heat but simply cannot wrap up opposing QBs for sacks. Jason Pierre-Paul had 5 tackles and 2 sacks on the night. He has been a bright spot on this Defensive Line. Vinny Curry and Gerald McCoy shared 1/2 sack a piece. The Defensive Line needs to work on getting pressure and wrapping up.

The Steelers Defensive Line was very disruptive tonight against Tampa Bay. They may have not been getting sacks but they forced Fitzpatrick to make some throws that he shouldn’t have made which resulted in interceptions. TJ Watt led the Defensive Line with 4 tackles.

LINEBACKER:

The Buccaneers Linebackers came to play like always. Lavonte David had 9 tackles which included 3 tackles for a loss. Kwon Alexander had 8 tackles. Adarius Taylor contributed with 1 tackle as well.

The Steelers Linebackers brought a lot of pressure tonight. Jon Bostic was all over the field with 6 tackles including a sack. Vince Williams also had 5 tackles which were all solo tackles. Bud Dupree had 3 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 pick 6.

DEFENSIVE BACKS:

The Buccaneers DBs got Brent Grimes back for this game. Brent Grimes didn’t look like Brent Grimes. He was sliding all over the field but field conditions may have played into this. Grimes still finished with 6 tackles. MJ Stewart had 9 tackles which were all solo tackles and 1 pass deflection. Justin Evans had 6 tackles and 1 interception. Carlton Davis had 3 tackles. Not sure where Ryan Smith was this game after having a career game last week.

The Eagles Steelers Defensive Backs ended up matching up pretty well with the Buccaneers receiving core. The Steelers may have given up 411 yards but it didn’t seem like it. Sean Davis had 6 tackles and 1 pass deflection.  Coty Sensabaugh had 5 tackles which were all solo tackles. Artie Burns had 4 tackles but also got beat by Mike Evans a few times which resulted in an Evans TD. Burns also caused the Godwin fumble. Terrell Edmunds had 1 tackle and 1 INT.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Bryan Anger punted the ball 3 times for 126 yards. Anger didn’t have to punt as much as last week because the Buccaneers killed clock with their drives downfield. Chandler Catanzaro had 2 FGs which were good and 3 Extra points. Catanzaro scored 9 points for the Buccaneers this week. DeSean Jackson was back returning punts and had 1 return for 0 yards. Jackson had a return for a TD but it was called back due to a penalty. Shaun Wilson had 5 kick returns for 68 yards.

Jordan Berry punted the ball 5 times for 228 yards. Monday Night Football announcers got Anger and Berry confused early on. Chris Boswell went 1 for 2 on FGs and 3 for 4 on Extra Points. Both of the misses from Boswell went off of the upright. Ryan Switzer had 1 punt return for 16 yards and 1 kick return for 21 yards.

WRAP-UP:

The Buccaneers did not look like the team from the first 2 weeks of the season. Ryan Fitzpatrick was off tonight and it just followed down the line with the rest of the team. The Defense gave up 23 points in the first half but buckled down in the second half. The first and second half of the game were night and day different. I could tell that the fire wasn’t there. The Offensive Line didn’t play like normal which lead to Fitzpatrick throwing his 3 interceptions. The clock has struck midnight and QB Jameis Winston is now available to participate with the team. Nobody believed that Tampa Bay would be 2-1 after the first 3 weeks. Now the question is: Does Jameis come back next week against Chicago? We’ll find out on Sunday in the Windy City.
